Eligibility: Robert H. N. Ho Family Foundation/ACLS Dissertation Fellowships in Buddhist Studies: Pursuit of the Ph.D. Degree at an accredited, degree-granting college or university.

-ACLS Postdoctoral International Fellowship: Applicants must have the Ph.D. officially conferred by an accredited, degree-granting university no earlier than Jan 1, 2010. The Ph.D. degree must be completed by November 5, 2013 (including defense and revisions) and conferred by May 31, 2014. (If the date of conferral is after the application deadline, the application must include an institutional statement attesting that all requirements for the Ph.D. have been fulfilled. Successful applicants will be asked to submit proof of conferral.) A scholarly product must be proposed, such as a book or digital resource, to be written in any language. Collections of materials and databases are not eligible. The application must be written in English by the applicant. There are no residence or citizenship requirements. The fellowship-in-residence may be proposed at any university except at the institution granting the applicant’s Ph.D. or the institution of current employment.
ACLS Collaborative Research Grants: Teams may consist of two or more members, preferably not from the same institution. Every team member must hold a Ph.D. conferred by an accredited, degree-granting university. However, an established scholar who can demonstrate the equivalent of the Ph.D. in publications and professional experience may also qualify. The application must be written in English by one of the members of the team. There are no residence or citizenship requirements. Every team member must be released from teaching for a minimum of three months per year of the grant period (i.e., a total of six months in a two-year project) to work on the proposed project. A minimum of three consecutive months during the grant period must be spent by the team in one location, working full time on the project, for joint research, study, analysis, or writing. The team must propose a jointly authored, research-based scholarly product, such as a book or digital resource, to be written in any language.
ACLS Visiting Professorships: Host institutions must be accredited, degree-granting colleges or universities. Visiting professors must hold a Ph.D. from an accredited, degree-granting university. However, an established scholar who can demonstrate the equivalent of the Ph.D. in publications and professional experience may also qualify. This is a global competition. There are no requirements as to location of the university or the professor’s citizenship. Professorships may be for one or two semesters. Courses to be taught must be in Buddhist studies and must be described in the professor’s statement attached to the institution’s application.

Description: The American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS) announces a new initiative supporting research and teaching in Buddhist studies funded by a $1.9 million grant from The Robert H. N. Ho Family Foundation. Working with the Foundation, ACLS will offer an articulated set of fellowship and grant competitions that will expand the understanding and interpretation of Buddhist thought in Scholarship and society, strengthen international networks of Buddhist studies, and increase the visibility of innovative currents in those studies.

ACLS Collaborative Research Grants: The grant period must begin between June 1, 2014 and September 30, 2015. Grant periods may vary according to project needs, but they should be planned for between one and two years’ duration. Although team members may alternate their periods of release from teaching, at least three months must be spent by all team members in one location for joint research, study, analysis, or writing.
ACLS Visiting Professorships: Teaching must be concluded by June 30, 2016.

ACLS Collaborative Research Grants: Maximum award: $200,000. Stipends may be used for release from teaching for individual team members (up to $65,000 for a 12-month period) and for project costs (travel, communications, acquiring materials). No university overhead is permitted.
ACLS Visiting Professorships: The award must cover salary, insurance, relocation, housing, research, and modest direct university expenses. A budget must be provided in the application and not exceed $200,000 per annum. The award is paid to the host institution on presentation of a signed contract with the professor for one or two semesters of teaching.
Selection Criteria: ACLS Postdoctoral Fellowship: Intrinsic significance of the topic and its potential contribution to Buddhist studies. Coherence and cogency of presentation. Feasibility of the plan of work. Record of the applicant’s previous accomplishments. Compatibility of the applicant with the proposed university. (The application must include a sample syllabus and a letter from the university confirming willingness to host the applicant for a two-year postdoctoral fellowship-in-residence.)
ACLS Collaborative Research Grants: Intrinsic significance of the project. Coherence and cogency of presentation. Potential contribution to Buddhist studies by relating different Buddhist traditions to each other or relating scholarship on the broad Buddhist tradition to contemporary concerns in other academic fields. Innovation and effectiveness in utilizing diverse disciplinary perspectives and methodologies, and in crossing national, cultural, and linguistic borders. Feasibility of the plan of work. Team members’ records of achievement and qualifications to carry out the work proposed.
ACLS Visiting Professorships: The academic quality of the courses proposed. The fit between the university’s interests and the professor’s qualifications and interests. The breadth of the professor’s contribution to the university (teaching of undergraduates and graduate students, organization of lecture series, conferences, etc.). The professor’s potential contribution to the international field of Buddhist studies.
